Some portrait sessions are about capturing a place. Others are about capturing a moment in someone's life. My session with Christina in Strasbourg was very much of the second kind: a celebration, with a photoshoot for a new chapter in her life.

If you're considering an on-location photoshoot for your own trip to Strasbourg, either to celebrate a milestone or to have memories of your Strasbourg stay, Christina's session will give you a good idea of what a photo session in Strasbourg looks like.

A photo shoot with a theme: celebrating a new chapter in her life

Before we met, Christina told me that she wanted to celebrate a new chapter in her life. This helped me to prepare for the session and understand the mood she was after in her photoshoot. Rather than aiming for polished, formal portraits, the aim was to create something looser and more alive: images that captured her bubbly, joyful energy exactly as it was in that moment.

This is one of my favourite parts of on-location portrait work; my portrait sessions are never generic. I always work with my client to understand why they want a photoshoot, why they chose that particular city. This helps me draft the whole session around my clients and how they want their portrait session to unfold, so their photos have a special meaning and give them that warm feeling when they look at them.

Starting in Petite France

We began, as many Strasbourg sessions do, in the Petite France, one of the oldest and most picturesque parts of the city that also says this is Strasbourg. With Christina's energy, it felt less like a photo shoot and more like two friends wandering the neighbourhood together, laughing between each shot.

I always see our photo shoot as a collaboration, where we are both having fun creating these memories for you. My idea is for you to feel relaxed and engaged with what is happening in front of the camera. I can tell you it shows up when someone feels relaxed and is having fun in front of my camera. I helped Christina move in front of the camera while having a conversation with her and let her energy and enthusiasm unfold while we were moving around the city

Following the Ill river toward the Cathedral

We followed the Ill River as it winds toward Strasbourg Cathedral. The river gave us a more romantic feel, and a more editorial vibe when shooting around the Quai des Bateliers.

Walking a route like this, rather than staying in one spot, means your image gallery has a range: playful, laughing portraits and shots with the cathedral rising in the background. It also meant we could chase great light as the afternoon changed.

In Christina's Words

Here's what Christina shared after our session:

The photo session with Rachel was fantastic, both professionally and personally! Thanks to her spontaneity and easygoing nature, she quickly put me at ease. She is highly professional, full of ideas, and brings a dynamic approach to her work; I loved working with her. We had fun collaborating, and I think that really shows in the photos! Thank you so much, Rachel, for a wonderful session; don’t change a thing.”

We had fun collaborating, and I think that really shows in the photos" is really the heart of it. When a session feels like a genuine collaboration rather than a performance, the photos capture something real. That's what I aim for every time.

Why This Matters for Your Own Session

Whether you're marking a big life change like Christina, celebrating an anniversary, travelling solo, or want portraits that actually look like you, the same principle applies: the best travel portraits come from feeling comfortable enough to be yourself while someone experienced handles the rest.

Strasbourg offers such a wide variety of backdrops within easy walking distance: the Petite France, the path along the Ill River and the cathedral. give us plenty to use as a backdrop and tell a story. We move through all these places during your portrait session to create beautiful memories of your Strasbourg stay.
