An Unforgettable Portrait Session in Strasbourg: Sylvie's Story
If you've ever scrolled through Instagram, admiring beautifully candid holiday portraits and wondering, "How do people get photos like that of themselves?" this post is for you. Today I want to take you through an on-location portrait session in Strasbourg with a wonderful client, Sylvie, and share why booking a photographer might be the best decision you make for your next trip.
Why book an on-location photo shoot?
Strasbourg is a city I know very well. I lived in the city a long time ago and always get back to it when I visit my family in Alsace. I love doing photo sessions starting in the Petite France, moving along the Ill River towards the cathedral, moving through the historic heart of the city. There's a difference between snapshots and portraits taken by a photographer who helps you be relaxed, present, and genuinely you in front of the camera.
That's where a flytographer-style session comes in. Instead of handing your phone to a stranger or awkwardly propping it on a wall for a timer shot, you get an hour (or more) with someone whose entire job is to help you feel comfortable, find the best light, and create images you'll actually want to print, frame, or look back on for years.
Meeting Sylvie at Petite France
We started the session in the Petite France, Strasbourg's historic quarter. It's a magical backdrop, but it can also be a lot: narrow streets, tourists everywhere, and that slightly self-conscious feeling many people get the moment a camera turns toward them.
Sylvie mentioned she wasn't used to being photographed, and that's honestly one of the most common things I hear at the start of a session. My approach is never to point and shoot. Imagine our photoshoot as a conversation while we walk from one location to the other. I aim to help you relax in front of the camera and laugh. I am here to guide you in front of the camera to help you look at your best. Within the first ten minutes, that initial stiffness melts away, and what's left is far more natural and far more you.
Wandering toward the cathedral
From Petite France, we made our way through the streets toward Strasbourg Cathedral, finding new locations on the way with a variety of backdrops as we walked. This stretch of the city offers such a different energy, a quieter vibe along the Ill River and more buzz when moving towards the streets around the cathedral.
Working this way, starting in one neighbourhood and finishing in another, means that your portrait gallery has a variety of portraits, candid walking shots, and a few dramatic frames with the cathedral rising in the background. It also mirrors how you'd naturally explore the city yourself, so the whole experience feels less like a "shoot" and more like an afternoon out, with photos happening along the way.
What Sylvie Had to Say
At the end of our session, Sylvie shared this:
"Very professional, friendly, and attentive, she knows exactly how to put you at ease in front of the camera. The shoot took place in a pleasant and supportive atmosphere."
This is exactly the kind of feedback that means the most to me. Technical skill matters, of course knowing how to read light, choosing the right angles, working quickly in changing conditions but none of that matters if a client feels tense or awkward in front of the lens. My goal is always to create a space where you can just be yourself, and let the photographs follow naturally from being at ease in front of the camera.
Planning Your Own Strasbourg Portrait Session
If you're planning a trip to Strasbourg, whether it's a solo adventure, a romantic getaway, or a family visit, a portrait session is a wonderful way to come home with more than just phone photos. We can build a route together that suits your pace and interests: the picturesque Petite France, the grandeur around the cathedral, or a mix of both, as we did with Sylvie.
Sessions typically start with one hour with 1 to 2 close locations or more depending on the locations you choose, and there's no need to worry about posing or "knowing what to do"; that's entirely my job. All you need to bring is yourself (and your favourite outfit).
If you're dreaming of portraits that actually capture you in one of Europe's most beautiful cities, I'd love to help make that happen. Get in touch to check availability and start planning your Strasbourg session.
