A Morning with Angela: Portrait Session Along Paris’ Canal Saint-Martin
Paris has a way of making even the simplest moments feel magical. There’s a kind of magic at every corner. That’s exactly what I felt during my recent portrait session with Angela along the Canal Saint-Martin, which is one of my favourite places to hang out in Paris.
We had just an hour together, and Angela wanted images for her portfolio that felt authentic, something that captured her connection to Paris without the clichés. The canal giving her portrait that Paris vibe.
The Setting: Canal Saint-Martin
There’s a reason Canal Saint-Martin is a favourite among locals and photographers alike. It’s Paris without the postcard crowds, iron footbridges, and the ripple of water reflections. For Angela, it was personal. She’d spent time here during her stays in Paris, and she wanted her portraits to feel like a love letter to those moments.
We wandered along the canal, stopping where the light felt just right. The morning sun was still soft, and the canal’s locks and bridges added a touch of Parisian character to her portrait. It wasn’t about posing; it was about being present. Angela moved naturally, laughing as she walked towards the camera. The breeze made her hair move. I was there to create a portrait that felt like her, letting her natural expression unfold in front of the camera as she listened to my instructions with a smile.
The Session: Quick but Meaningful
One of the things I love most about portrait photography is how even a short session can yield powerful results. We didn’t need hours, just an aligned vision and a willingness to embrace the moment. Angela’s energy was infectious. She wasn’t trying to be anyone but herself, and that’s what made the portraits so special.
We played with movement and stillness. I made her look away from the viewer and into the camera to change the energy in the portrait. Some of my favourite shots came from the simplest setups: Angela leaning against a bridge, sitting at a café, or walking along the river. The key was to keep it natural. No stiff poses, no forced smiles, just Angela, Paris, and the quiet magic of the morning.
Why Canal Saint-Martin?
If you’ve ever walked along the canal, you know it’s more than just a pretty location. It’s a place where Paris feels alive in a different way, less about the grand monuments and more about the everyday Paris. For Angela, it was the perfect setting to capture her connection to the city. For me, it was a reminder of why I love destination portrait sessions: they’re not just about the photos, but the stories behind them.
