Portraits with a message

Portrait of women who served during World War Two

A portrait photography project celebrating Women Who Contributed to the Second World War effort by serving in the Navy (WRNS), Air Force (WAAF), Army(ATS), Land Army and the Aviation Transport Authority(ATA). I created this project to celebrate Women who took part in the World War Two effort. I started this project with 4 women while completing my MA in Fine Art Photography, and decided to continue working on it for another 3 years to find Women to feature in the project.

Rachel's innate interest in World War II was spurred on when, as a child, she uncovered that her grandfather from Alsace had been conscripted and forced to fight for Germany on the Russian front. In this book, she brings to life the stories of 21 women who served in the war effort. Through her diligent research and interviews, she faithfully captures their voices and the stories of their essential yet overlooked roles. Their untold stories were finally given justice in 2005 when a memorial dedicated to the women of World War Two was unveiled in Whitehall, London – a monument to the few last survivors who could speak of their experiences in their own words.
